COLORCARE

ColorCare Policy

Congratulations on your magical hair! Please review the home care instructions for your hair as these are the best methods to ensure longevity of the color. If you do not follow these recommendations, you risk damage of color and possibly your hair.

1. Don't shampoo for at least 48 hours after getting color.

2. Shamoo just at the scalp, try to avoid shampooing the mids/ends of your hair. Condition just the ends afterwards.

3. INVEST in color safe shampoos/conditioners/products. I have a selection available in my suite.

What Can Fade Your Fresh Color?

1. Shampooing too often

2. Hot tools/hot water! Nothing over 330 degrees

3. Swimming in chlorine/salt water

4. Facial cleansers/astringents

5. The sun

6. Well water

7. Non-Color Safe Clarifying shampoo

8. Poor shampoos/conditioners/products made with cheap ingredients

What Can You Do To Help?

1. Try to shampoo every other day, every third day. Invest in a good color safe dry shampoo for your inbetween days.

2. Use heat protection! Try to avoid heat everyday. Use cooler water when shampooing.

3. IF you are going to swim, dampen your hair and coat it in a good conditioner, braid it/pony tail it and enjoy yourself.

4. Try to avoid rubbing too much into your hairline!

5. Avoid having your hair in direct sunlight. Use hats. Invest in a UV protection if you must be in the sun for prolonged periods of time.

6. Invest in a filtration system for your shower! You'll thank me later.

7. Most Clarifying shampoos are NOT meant for colored hair.

8. Please invest in good quality shampoos and products for your beautiful new color

Unicorn Colors (Red heads, and Silver You Too)!

EXTENSIONS

Taking care of your new Hand-Tied Hair Extensions at home can be a little bit of an adjustment, but don’t let that scare you! Most women say they are surprised how easy they are to care for. With a little extra care and attention, particularly on wash day, you’ll be used to your new routine in no time. Below, I’ve done my best to outline what extra steps you’ll need to take to make sure you’re keeping your extensions in great condition between maintenance appointments. All products we recommend are available for purchase through me and a complimentary detangler is given to all guests' in theirinitial installation appointment.

*Any use of products that are not recommended by me are not recommended for your extensions. In my extensive training, I learned what types of products can cause damage and therefore, can only recommend the products I know and trust for your hair. Should you use anything other than what I recommend, please know you will be responsible for any damage caused to them.

Brushing

Keeping your hair detangled needs to be a priority to protect both your natural hair and extension hair from matting or damage. Follow these steps to properly brush your hair!

  • For a thorough detangling, morning and night, and always before and after washing: sectioning is key! Using a clip, gather your bottom row and all of your natural hair above it and clip it on top of your head. This will allow you to freely brush and detangle your natural hair below your bottom row all the way to the scalp. Then, let your bottom row down and gather all the hair above your bottom row into the clip on top of your head. Holding the top of the row with your hand or fingers, carefully brush your extensions from the ends working your way up to the top of the row, being very careful not to snag your brush over the top of the row where it is attached to your head. If you have a second row, you’ll want to first make sure to brush + detangle your natural hair between your rows before letting your top row down to brush it. It may seem excessive, but by taking extra gentle care to section and brush your hair this way, you’ll be pretty much guaranteed to avoid matting or damage.

  • For brushing throughout the day: Always keep your detangling brush It will come in handy for brushing on the fly, after you get in and out of your car in the wintertime when static and coats and scarves can cause tangling. Just remember to place your hand at the top of the row to relieve excess tension on the scalp, and start from the bottom and work your way up, avoiding brushing over the top of the row.

Cleansing + Conditioning

Before washing, always thoroughly detangle your hair section by section using the instructions above.

  • In the same way that you sectioned your hair to brush it, you will section it to shampoo, so take your clips into the shower with you! Gently shampoo your scalp below, between, and above your rows with sulfate- and paraben-free shampoo and lukewarm water. It isn’t necessary to rub the ends of your hair together while washing – focus on cleansing your scalp well to avoid product buildup and let the suds of your shampoo wash over the rest of your hair. If your shampoo doesn’t suds up, add more water before adding more shampoo.

  • Conditioning: Once you have shampooed and rinsed, gently squeeze the excess water from your hair and apply a small amount of Conditioner or Masque and work it through the ends of your extension hair and natural hair, avoiding getting conditioner near the top of the row, as it may encourage slipping at the attachment points, and it will be difficult to rinse thoroughly. Gently distribute the conditioner through your hair, and leave on for up to 5 minutes or more. Be sure to completely rinse all conditioner from your hair.

Drying + Styling

  • Gently squeeze out the excess water and blot your hair with a cotton towel. Add recommended leave-ins and sprays. Use a detangling brush to detangle and straighten hair while extensions are still damp, starting from the bottom up. Again, it may be best to section your hair if you have more than one row.

  • Gently dry your hair until it is almost completely dry before using any brushes. This applies to Blow-Dry Bars as well – be sure to communicate to whoever is styling your hair NOT to  round-brush your hair from start to finish or they will damage your extensions and possibly your natural hair as well!

  • You may use a round brush or boar bristle brush and very gentle tension to smooth your hair and the extension hair the last few minutes of your blow-dry.

  • If hot styling your extensions, again, it will help to section your hair using clips. Do not go above 350 Degrees. Spray heat protectant. Run the extension hair through the iron to smooth the hair once or twice before curling/straightening – this will give your extensions a more smoothed and polished look.

Extensions on Vacation

One of the most common questions I get starts with, “I’m going on vacation…!” Well, I’m here to tell you that YES, you absolutely can enjoy your vacation with your extensions in, just know that you’re going to have to take a little extra care if you DO plan on swimming!

  • Detangle your hair, wet it down, and apply a leave-in treatment or use conditioner to your extension hair. Place your hair into a pony or braid before entering the water. Be sure to use a color-safe clarifying shampoo immediately after exposure to ocean, lake, or pool water. Minerals found within natural and man made bodies of water can react poorly with extension hair and may lead to discoloration.

  • NEVER let sunscreen, suntan oil, or self-tanning products touch the extension hair as this may lead to discoloration. To be safe, always avoid sunscreens that contain the chemical ingredient avobenzone.

  • I will not be held responsible for any discoloration or change in hair integrity resulting from lack of brushing, maintenance, missing appointments, or contact with ocean, lake, pool water, or sunscreen products. Any damage done to your extensions after being exposed to any of these elements may result in needing to replace your wefts!

A few more tips…

  • For best results, stick with the products I suggest!

  • Use a leave-in conditioner or serum on your extensions to keep from tangling or drying out

  • Loosely braid extensions before sleeping

  • Sleep on a silk pillow or using a silk turban

  • Brush regularly with a detangling brush – just keep it in your purse!

  • Avoid using professional-only toning shampoos – I will not replace any extension hair that has been discolored as a result of using toning shampoos **PURPLE OR BLUE SHAMPOOS**

  • Use Heat Protectant and never go above 350 degrees!

  • Maintenance is every 6-8 weeks. once you go past the 8 week mark you risk damage to your hair and extensions. I am not responsible for the damage to your hair/extensions if you miss an appointment.

Caring for your new hair is easier than you think! If you have any additional questions, be sure to ask me at your next maintenance appointment!

FAQ'S

FAQ'S:

It’s no surprise I get questions ALL. THE. TIME. about the world's most popular service. I've done my best to include answers to EVERY single question I've gotten from inquiring women via email, DM, or even inquiring clients in the salon. If by chance you don’t see your question answered here, you can email me at hairdolljess@gmail.com.

What method of extensions do you do?

I have been trained by leading extension artists across the country in multiple hand-tied weft installation methods. The wefts are installed using a very safe application method. There is no heat, glue or solvents used on your hair during the application or removal process. The hair can be used 4-12 months depending on color, lifestyle, and products. 6-8 week maintenance is required.

How much do the extensions cost?

I am very transparent about our pricing for both initial installation services and maintenance appointments so that there are never any surprises! Pricing listed on our services page is for the service ONLY which includes hair color and hand-tied hair installation. Under each installation option you will also see that we list the typical amount spent on hand-tied wefts for each installation option.

How often do I have to come in for maintenance appointments?

Maintenance appointments are recommended every 6-8 weeks. At each maintenance appointment we will touch up your hair color and your extensions, and you’ll leave feeling as fresh as the day they were first installed!

What extensions methods have you been trained in?

I have been trained in:

  • SKW

  • Meraki

How long do appointments take?

I typically reserve 3-4 hours for the initial installation appointment this is also depending upon on the type of color service you are receiving.

Should I pack a lunch?

You’re welcome to bring anything you’d like to snack on during your appointment, but I do have a           variety of snacks  available, as well as water and coffee.

How long will the extensions last before I have to buy new hair?

All extension hair differs when it comes to lifespan, but it can last 4 months up to a year with proper care. Rest assured we will go over all the in-salon and at-home care required to keep your extensions looking their best.

When replacing hair, I recommend NOT mixing new hair with old hair and instead purchasing an entire new set of wefts in one appointment around the 7-9 month mark.

Do I need to come in for a consultation first?

Yes. a complimentary 15 minute consultation is required to schedule an installment appointment.

Can I go swimming with my extensions in?

While I would love to say yes, salt water and chlorine from swimming pools can potentially reduce the longevity of your extensions. The salt and chemicals can dry out the hair, contributing to tangling and matting issues, and potentially leave them discolored as well. If you still plan on swimming, getting your hair wet and using a leave-in conditioner before putting your hair into a braid, and then rinsing immediately post-swim, will help avoid damage!

Is it true that sunscreen can discolor my extension hair?

It IS true that some sunscreens contain an ingredient that can discolor your blonde hair and make it very difficult to correct. If you wear sunscreen, I recommend pulling your hair up and not letting it touch your skin until you have had a chance to thoroughly wash the sunscreen off your skin.

Can I bring in my own hair for you to install?

Unfortunately, no. I cannot guarantee the quality or know the true source of the hair unless I purchase the hair professionally.

Can my regular stylist do my color and you just do my extensions?

No. I understand and appreciate your loyalty to your current stylist. Unfortunately, there’s just no way for me to guarantee consistency or a perfect blend of your extensions with stylists at two different salons working on your hair color, especially when not every stylist is used to working with extension hair. Extensions are an investment and I wouldn’t risk potentially ruining them.
